In 1968, Moitessier, aboard the Joshua, departed for the first non-stop regatta around the world. He was comfortably in front of the pack and the sure winner he abandoned the race and continued to sail through the South Seas. Using a slingshot, he shot a message for the Sunday Times which read: 'I am going to continue on toward the island of the Pacific without landing because I am happy in the sea and, perhaps, to save my soul'. It is reason why the Polynesian nicknamed him 'Tamata', which in their language means 'to try'
